Maryland Troopers Make Largest Heroin Bust In 5 YearsTwo Men Stopped For Speeding Found With 700 Pounds Of Heroin in Maryland
JESSUP, Maryland -- Maryland State Police charged two Florida men allegedly found with large amounts of heroin.
Police charged Jairo L. Gonzalez, 23, of the 100 block of North Shore Drive in Miami Beach, Fla., and Alberto Puente, 47, of the 2300 block of 174th Street in Miami, with trafficking heroin, possession of a large amount of heroin, possession with the intent to distribute heroin and possession of heroin.
Authorities found 700 grams of heroin worth $500,000 because it's a high-grade cocaine, according to police. Police said they later determined that Puente is in the United States illegally.
Trooper 1st Class Shaft Hunter stopped the two men in a Mitsubishi Galant on Interstate 95 near the Maryland Route 175 interchange for a speeding violation, according to Cpl. Rob Moroney. When Gonzalez didn't provide his driver's license, Puente (pictured, right) translated information.
After calling for assistance, Hunter felt there was reasonable suspicion to indicate that the men were involved in some sort of criminal activity, according to Moroney. A trooper who speaks fluent Spanish was called and Gonzalez granted written permission for police to search the vehicle.
Hunter said he became suspicious when he saw that compartments were not sealed properly.
"It wasn't factory sealed, so ... we started looking further into the vehicle. Once we got to this compartment here, that's when we saw the package hidden up in this compartment here," Hunter said.
The drugs were found under the dashboard behind the radio in two duct-taped packages. Police said this is the biggest heroin bust at the Waterloo Barracks for in least five years.
The two are being held at the Waterloo state police barracks and will go before a Howard County, Maryland Court commissioner Wednesday evening for an initial appearance.
On Wednesday, Maryland police made an arrest in Perryville, confiscating more than 10 pounds of heroin with a street value of more than $2 million.
