For teen drivers, tickets now bring added trouble in MarylandSALISBURY, Maryland -- Whether it be a seat belt violation or speeding ticket, teenage drivers can expect at least one new problem when they are stopped by Maryland State Police -- a phone call to mom and dad. Maryland State Police spokesman Cpl. Rob Moroney said whenever a driver under the age of 18 is stopped for a motor vehicle, seat belt or license violation, or is at fault in an accident, a trooper now will call home to the teen's parents to tell them what happened.
Moroney said if a Maryland trooper cannot make contact by phone after 24 hours, a letter from the barrack commander will be sent to the teen's address.
Lt. Douglas Dods of Maryland State Police's Berlin Barrack said before the new policy, troopers would only call the parents in the event of an accident or a serious offense, such as driving under the influence.
Dods said Maryland State Police's new approach will keep more people in the loop.
"The purpose is to get their parents involved," he said.
David Elzey, a spokesman for the Eastern Shore Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said the call should help cut down on accidents involving young drivers.
"It's good," he said. "There needs to be an accountability for young people."
Andrea Eaton, a parent from Princess Anne, also applauded the idea.
"It's going to help keep tabs on my kids for me," she said.
Previously, some traffic citations for teens would go unnoticed by parents until increased insurance rates came in the mail.
"If we stopped a 16-year-old or 17-year-old and issued them a citation, they could just go ahead and pay it and their parents would have never known," Moroney said.
Maryland state police officials said the changes -- which went into effect Thursday -- are designed to improve driving safety among teenagers in Maryland through family involvement.
In a two-year stretch beginning in 2001, 90 people under the age of 18 died in car accidents in Maryland, police said.
On Sunday, 18-year-old driver Patrick W. Miles of Dagsboro struck a tree on Memory Garden Lane in Hebron.
The crash hospitalized Miles and killed the passenger in his car, 21-year-old Brian Michael Tull of Hebron, police said.
State police are still investigating the incident.
Along with the phone calls, all Maryland State Police barracks will chart juvenile car accidents on a monthly basis. The statistics will help police track trouble spots in the area.
