AAA: Maryland Drivers Concerned About Aggressive Driving

Maryland - Aggressive drivers remain the top threat overall to the safety of motorists on roads in Maryland and throughout the five-state mid-Atlantic region, according to the results of the 2003 AAA Mid-Atlantic Transportation Poll.

Overall 43 percent of drivers -- 44 percent in Maryland -- are more worried by the tailgating, reckless speeding, rage behavior and darting across lanes that have come to define the scourge of aggressive driving on area roadways than any other danger.

Traffic congestion and road conditions are close behind -- cited by 32 percent of Maryland drivers as the greatest danger on the road. Just over 10 percent named drunken drivers as their top concern, even though alcohol was a factor in 41 percent of fatal crashes in 2002. Less than 10 percent named large trucks as the factor that most endangers their highway safety.

"The perceived low threat from drunk drivers concerns us," said Lon Anderson, AAA Mid-Atlantic's Director of Public and Government Affairs. "While aggressive drivers are very visible, and often do cause crashes, alcohol was a factor in some 41 percent of fatal highway crashes ... 16,653 deaths just last year according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Drivers clearly need to be more aware of the role that alcohol often plays in aggressive driving, as well as the threat that even non-aggressive drunken drivers pose on the road.

"Alcohol often fuels many aggressive drivers' dangerous behavior, but public awareness hasn't caught up. The added risk of aggressive driving is that it is contagious, as motorists 'retaliate' or respond to the poor driving behavior and rudeness around them," the AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman said.

"There's no question that motorists don't have to look far on our highways to find aggressive drivers," he said.

The overwhelming majority of drivers polled have seen driving so aggressive that it endangered them or other drivers in the last year. And respondents say aggressive driving is increasing.

In addition, a large share of drivers admitted that they engaged in aggressive driving behavior more often than a few years ago:

More than 32 percent admitted driving 20 miles or more over the speed limit; such reckless speeding is almost always a factor in aggressive driving, according to Maryland area law enforcement.
Surprisingly, significant numbers of drivers also admitted to other violations. When asked, "thinking honestly about your own driving during the past year, which of the following have you done while driving," one in five admitted to rude gesturing, and some one in four admitted to tailgating and weaving or making abrupt lane changes.

"Area law enforcement officers throughout Maryland and the Baltimore and Washington metro areas have worked diligently through the Smooth Operator initiative to crack down on aggressive drivers," Anderson said. "But it's clear that much more is still needed to tame our area highways.
